Economics is often regarded as the queen of social sciences. As a starting point, it is essential and important, firstly to know what economics is about and what is the subject matter of economics. It seeks to explain systematically a large variety of questions pertaining to economic behavior of individuals, society and the economy. The meaning of economics explained below.
Meaning of Economics:
Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses, governments, and societies make choices about ways to use limited resources to fulfill their needs and wants. It deals with the allocation of scarce resources, which have alternative uses, and the decision-making processes to maximize utility or efficiency.
Economics is a social science that studies how men, and society make decisions about how to allocate limited resources. The term “economics” comes from the Greek word oikos and nomos meaning “household management .” Thus it refers to managing of a household using limited funds. The classical and neo – classical economists called this economics as political economy. Economics as a subject emerged scientifically in the year 1776 when Adam Smith for the first time in his book ‘Wealth of Nation’ defined economics as a social science. Because of this he regarded as father of economics. However, it was Alfred Marshall who is in 1890 used the term economics in his famous book, named ‘Principles of Economics’ It means the study of business affairs in general.
In simpler terms, economics examines the scarcity of resources like time, money, raw material etc. are limited in nature. Here people make choices on how to allocate these resources and shows the different behaviors.
Definitions of Economics:
Broadly speaking the definitions of economics can be classified in to four groups.
- Classical Definition as well as Wealth Definition of economics: The credit of defining economics as a subject for the first time goes to Adam Smith. he is regarded as the father of economics and wrote a book ‘An Enquiry into the Nature and causes of Wealth of Nation. According to him Economics is the study of wealth how wealth is produced, distributed, and exchange, focuses on wealth creation and accumulation.
- Welfare Definition as well as Neo- Classical Definition of Economics: In the 19th century Alfred Marshall defined economics as a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life in his famous book Principles of Economics, which was published in 1890. Economics studies human welfare, focusing on how resources are used to improve people’s well-being and also emphasizes the well-being of society.
3. Modern Definition as well as Scarcity Definition of Economics: Lionel Robbin gave this definition in his book ‘ An essay on the nature and significance of economic science’ wrote in the year 1931. According to him Economics is the science of human behavior that deals with the relationship between ends and scarce means, which have alternative uses. It focuses on scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost.
4. Growth-Oriented Definition: This definition is given by Prof. Paul Samuelson. He defined economics from the point of economic growth. Economics is the study of how societies use limited resources to produce goods and services and distribute them to satisfy people’s needs and wants. This definition Includes elements of economic growth and development.
