North India Under Water: Deadly Floods Hit J&K, Himachal & Punjab

Severe floods have hit Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab following heavy rains and multiple cloudburst incidents across North India in the past 48 hours. The situation has led to massive destruction, loss of lives, and widespread disruption in normal life.

What Happened?

Continuous torrential rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides, with rivers like Chenab, Beas, and Sutlej flowing above the danger mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a red alert for these regions, predicting extreme rainfall due to active monsoon and Western Disturbance impact.

  • Jammu & Kashmir: Cloudbursts in Kishtwar and Doda districts caused heavy damage to houses and roads. At least 10 people have been reported dead, and several others are missing. Rescue teams are facing difficulty due to washed-out bridges and blocked roads.
  • Himachal Pradesh: Flash floods in Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla have claimed 15 lives so far. National Highways are blocked, and the Chandigarh-Manali highway remains closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Punjab: Overflowing rivers have caused severe flooding in low-lying areas of Gurdaspur, Pathankot, and Ropar. Several villages are submerged, forcing thousands to evacuate.

Rescue and Relief Operations

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, and local administration have launched massive rescue operations. Over 5,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations. Relief camps are being set up, and airlifting of stranded tourists in Himachal is underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured full support to the affected states, while the Home Ministry released an emergency relief fund to speed up rehabilitation work.

What Caused the Disaster?

Experts attribute this to intense monsoon activity combined with climate change, leading to unpredictable cloudbursts and heavy rainfall patterns in hilly regions.
